2026 ACTIVEWEAR TRENDS I CAN GET BEHIND
At the start of a new year, it’s pretty hard not to be motivated and excited about refreshing the activewear in my closet. As someone who loves fitness, I don’t really need much motivation to hit the gym, especially because it’s winter and it’s freezing. My goal is to keep moving, and the key, I’ve learned, is a good outfit. It’s a snowball effect, really. When you look good, you feel good, you perform better, you feel better…so on and so forth. As a result, my activewear, which frankly could probably be a closet all its own at this point, has the perfect outfit for every activity from pilates to strength training. After all, my least favorite thing is getting ready and absolutely hating everything I see in the activewear drawer.
Over the past few years, there has been a version of activewear and sportswear that seems to live purely on Instagram, and then there is the kind that is actually worn. The lines are blurring slightly, but I’ve always lived somewhere in that in-between. The place where activewear is functional but still styled. This transition has given rise to a bunch of different trends and microtrends. Some are worth it, while others aren’t. Here are a few I can genuinely get behind and may even be adding to my closet (and wearing) right now. The ones that make getting dressed easier, workouts more enjoyable, and post-gym errands feel intentional.
Contrasting Lines & Piping
Contrasting is the retro, fun upgrade a lot of brands are turning to this year. It’s doing a lot of visual work in the best way. These graphic details create structure, highlight movement, and accentuate even the simplest silhouettes and making them feel dynamic. Whether it’s just a subtle seam running down the leg or a more bold color-blocked edge, contrasting lines are fashion-forward without sacrificing function. They are surprisingly flattering, giving shape and direction to pieces designed to move with you.
Red Hot
Red has entered the activewear chat. From cherry leggings to bright tomato sports bras, red feels powerful, confident, and a little unexpected in a sea of neutrals. Red is the type of color that makes you feel energized before you even start a workout. If an all-red set feels like too much, mixing red with black, grey, or white still delivers impact while staying wearable. Consider this your sign to stop saving bold colors for “someday.” Even the smallest red addition can pack a big punch.
LAYERING
At first, this one reminded me of middle school, but what started as a micro trend is now everywhere, and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere any time soon. A layered top or sports bra is likely available from your favorite brand right now in a variety of different cuts, styles, and colors for you to choose from. It is one of the easiest ways to add dimension to an outfit, and it is practical. Layered bras and tops are supportive, chic, and add that little something extra you need on some days.
Short Sets
It might not be summer, but short sets are still having a moment. Matching bike shorts and tops still feel effortless, cool, and incredibly functional. These sets are ideal for high-intensity workouts, hot studios, and long gym walks, when you want minimal layers. What I love most about short sets is how styled they look with almost no effort. Toss on sneakers or an oversized layer on top, and suddenly it’s a full outfit. Not just gym clothes.
Onesies
Activewear onesies have moved on from intimidating to wearable. Newer versions are supportive, flattering, and have improved designs that actually move with the body. Onesies never fail on days when you’re in a rush or just don’t feel like trying to put together an outfit. Once you get over the fact that it’s a onesie and you have to say “onesie,” they are actually comfortable, streamlined, and look really good. They are perfect for low to medium-impact workouts like pilates, barre, or yoga. Just toss on a sweatshirt or chic jacket afterwards, and you’re all set.
The best activewear works with real life, not against it. If it’s functional enough for a proper workout and stylish enough to make you feel good before and after, then you’ve hit the mark. Whether you’re layering, leaning into more bold colors, or trying out a silhouette you never thought you would, activewear has really become about expression. And honestly? As I said, when you like what you’re wearing, you’re way more likely to show up and move your body. And that will always be on trend.
