1 ITEM, 3 WAYS: ATHLETIC SHORTS

Being a teen in the early 2000s, athletic shorts had one job. Okay, maybe that isn’t exactly true. We all wore Soffe with the waistband rolled down anytime, any place. That went away, and athletic shorts were more for working out and coming off the second you were done. That rule is essentially dead. This summer, the same shorts that used to live exclusively in a gym bag are showing up with blazers, button-downs, loafers, and bags that definitely cost more than a gym membership. Nobody’s wearing them to run, but everybody’s wearing them anyway.

I’m into it. So here’s how we got here and three ways to style them.

A short history

Shorts and sport have been tangled up for longer than you might assume. Women were competing in them as early as the 1920s when athletes traded restrictive skirts for something that actually moves. It wasn’t about style, but the function of being allowed to run. Style came later, and it came from the sidelines first.

Tennis whites in the 60s and 70s made athletic shorts look aspirational instead of just functional. Hip-hop and skate culture in the 80s and 90s pulled them off the court entirely and into the street, pairing them with oversized tees and sneakers that were much more about attitude than sport. Then came the 2000s, when the line between “gym clothes” and “clothes” started blurring for good. The athleisure boom of the 2010s finished the job off.

What’s happening now is the next chapter of the same story. The shorts stopped being a compromise between comfortable and cute. They became the outfit.

The 2026 Version

Track shorts are a genuine wardrobe staple, worn for every occasion except the one they were designed for. Errands, dinner, and even the office, if you’re daring enough. Some of that is comfort. People are tired of leggings and how they feel and look. They are moving toward things that are looser and easier. Some of it is that the shorts themselves have gotten better. Brands are making them in satin, taffeta, and Terry, embroidered and patched - no longer stuck in performance polyester.

But the real shift comes in the styling. An oversized blazer turns a pair of track shorts into a look instead of a leftover from a workout. Loafers do more for them than sneakers can. So does a trench coat, a cropped sweater, or a bag that has clearly never been near a gym. The shorts remain the same; everything around them just got dressed up.

3 Ways to Wear Them

Errand-Day Uniform

This one is the errand-day go-to. You look together even though you actually didn’t try. A plain white tee and a pair of track shorts are the comfort part; everything else is doing the styling work. Mules rather than sneakers change the whole tone. Suddenly, this isn’t a gym-adjacent outfit. A structured top-handle bag and aviators add to the “I have somewhere to be” look. Because you do have somewhere to be, whether it’s coffee runs or anywhere you need to be, and look pulled together in about four minutes.

Resort Off-Duty

This one borrows logic from a very specific, old photo of Harrison Ford at Cannes in 1982. He’s wearing a blazer, track shorts, and loafers, looking like he wandered off a yacht and stumbled into Cannes by accident. It’s still the best formula for making track shorts look expensive. The blazer worn open over a baggy tank top with track shorts with classic stripe detailing is sporty on purpose. A raffia clutch, a pair of flip flops, and tinted sunglasses finish the look off. It’s the outfit for lunch somewhere with good light, a long weekend, or anywhere you just want to bring the resort-casual vibe.

Sport-Prep, Undone

Red track shorts, a striped button-down, and a baseball cap. This exact formula that’s been showing up on the L.A. street style circuit lately, and it works because nothing about it is trying too hard. An oversized button-down worn over loose woven shorts is the whole trick. Everything else is there for the vibes. The one twist: leather sneakers instead of anything actually athletic, which is the detail that makes the whole outfit styled rather than thrown on before a run. This is the version for a day that starts casual and doesn’t need to change for whatever comes after.
