SIX MICROTRENDS I’M PAYING ATTENTION TO

Every season brings a wave of trends, and honestly, at a point, most of them blur together. But every once in a while, a handful of specific, slightly unexpected ideas start showing up everywhere at once - on runways, Pinterest, on that one girl at the coffee shop that always looks impossibly put together - and they’re too good to ignore. Those, my friend, are microtrends, and spring has some really fun ones I’m paying a ton of attention to.

What even is a microtrend?

A microtrend isn’t a full-blown fashion movement. It’s not ‘minimalism is back’ or ‘the ‘90s are having a moment.’ It’s way more specific than that.Think: a particular silhouette, a material choice, a styling detail. It’s the kind of thing that shows up here and there on runways, gets picked up in street style, pops off on Instagram, and suddenly you’re seeing it in your nearest Zara within six weeks.

The Microtrends I’m Paying Attention To

Sheer Balloon Pants

Sheer had a moment. It is still really having its moment. Balloon pants also had their moment. Someone, somewhere, decided to combine the two, and honestly? It works. The pants are playful and a little daring without being too costumey, which is a hard line to walk. They’ve got volume, movement, and just enough ‘wait, what?’ factor to make them interesting. They are serving Jasmine from Aladdin, and I’m here for it.

If the idea of see-through pants makes you nervous, there are easy ways in the door. Wear them over a swimsuit at the beach. Style them under an oversized button-down so it’s just a flash of leg. Or go full commitment with a pair of high-waisted briefs underneath, and you own it. The beauty of this trend is that it works on multiple levels of boldness - you just pick the one that fits your comfort zone.

Capes

I love a good cape. Capes dominated the fall and winter in heavier fabrics, and now they are crossing over into spring with lighter, breezier, and honestly more wearable fabrics. Expect to see cape details showing up in unexpected places: free-flowing blouses, deconstructed trench coats, and draped separates.

It’s less “superhero costume” and more “effortlessly dramatic layering piece.” What I like about this one is that it doesn’t require you to go buy a literal cape. The trend is really about that draped, throwover silhouette - extra fabric that moves and catches air. I’d definitely roll with a cape-back blouse with jeans or a lightweight trench with cape detailing over a slip dress. They are both polished but unfussy, which is exactly the sweet spot for spring outerwear.

Fuzzy Handbags

Fuzzy, textured handbags were all over the spring/summer ‘26 runways, featuring shearling, feathers, and pony hair. Fendi went with shearling. Bottega Veneta brought out pink, yes pink, pony skin. These are normally elements you’d expect out of autumn/winter collections, making them super surprising and exciting for spring.

A furry bag is a statement piece, full stop. It doesn’t need to match anything. It doesn’t need to “go.” It just needs to exist in your outfit as the thing that makes people look twice. Throw a shearling-trimmed bag over your shoulder with a linen dress and sandals, and tell me that doesn’t look good. It’s a texture play at its most satisfying.

Satin Coats

There is something about a satin coat that immediately makes someone look like the most glamorous person in the room, even if you’re just running to pick up dinner. The sheen, the weight, the way it catches the light. It’s outerwear that feels like an event. This spring, satin coats are showing up in every style from classic trench coats to oversized wraps, and they look equally good dressed up or thrown over something casual.

The styling trick here is contrast. A satin coat over a white tee and denim? Utter perfection. Over a slip dress for dinner? Obviously. It’s the kind of piece that does all the heavy lifting so the rest of your outfit can stay simple. High impact, low effort - my favorite ratio.

Peplums

Peplums are back. I felt weird about this one at first. It just reminds me of the mid-2000s when we used to dress like we were going to the office to go out at night, but the more I see them, I get it. They’re different this time. On the spring runways, designers like Magda Butrym and Erdem went ultra-feminine with lace, boning, and puffed sleeves; meanwhile, Khaite went the opposite direction with sleek, structured peplums styled with jeans. Then there was Dries Van Noten, who went slightly off kilter in an on-brand way, pairing a peplum top with tropical print shorts because why not? Somehow it worked.

That range is exactly why peplums are interesting. They aren’t one-note anymore. A structured top with denim is an instant outfit upgrade, while a softer, draped version feels fresher and more modern. I’m surprised I can say the peplum has grown up and is actually giving you loads more to work with than it did the first time. I probably still wouldn’t wear them to the club again; however, if I did, it wouldn’t look as weird, that’s for sure.

Two-Tone Flip Flops

Flip flops already had their redemption arc thanks to The Row’s viral pair, which, for this season, got a color upgrade. Now we are on to two-tone flip flops, where the sole and the strap are contrasting colors. They are everywhere. Red and black. Pink and green. Tan and white. It’s a small detail, but it turns a basic shoe into something worth noticing.

The styling here is simple, and that’s the appeal. Loose jeans, a button-down or lightweight knit, and a pair of two-tone flip flops. Done. It’s the kind of trend that proves you don’t need to spend a lot to try too hard to look like you know what you’re doing. Something the smallest detail is the one that ties the whole thing together. These are far from the obnoxious Old Navy flip flops we wore back in the day.

The Bottom Line

Spring microtrends are supposed to be fun. A chance to experiment with something specific without having to commit to a whole new aesthetic. You don’t have to try all six. You don’t even have to try one. But if something on this list made you pause and think, I could pull that off, it’s one worth exploring.
