THE STYLE COMBINATION THAT HAS NEVER LET ME DOWN

There are very few style rules I follow without question, and there are some that I will defend with my entire chest. Sandals and jeans are one combination I will defend until the very end. They are never a bad idea. The combination has survived every micro-trend, every style era, and every season where someone tried to convince us all that quiet luxury meant wearing white sneakers exclusively. This combination came out on the other side completely unbothered, which, honestly, is really the only qualification a great outfit formula needs.

What makes the combination great and worth actually thinking about, rather than just grabbing whatever is closest, is that “sandals and jeans” is almost so broad it could mean anything on its own. For example, a flat toe loop sandal with mid-rise jeans is one kind of outfit, while Birkenstocks and a pair of very lived-in baggy jeans is another. Both are correct, but have completely different energy, and that energy matters. So instead of a vague directive, here’s a breakdown of four specific pairings I’m into right now, from street style to social media posts, what makes each one work, and a few options if you’re ready to pull it off.

Why It’s a Classic

Part of what makes this pairing so durable is the contrast it creates. Denim, by nature, is much more casual but a little utilitarian. It has weight to it, literally and figuratively. A sandal pretty much cuts against that. They are open, light, and warm-weather staples, which means when they are paired together, they create an effortless push and pull that is dressed up but laid back at the same time.

There’s also something good about showing the foot. A chunky boot with jeans closes everything off and feels very contained. A sandal opens the silhouette back up and lets the outfit breathe. Whether you’re going with strappy sandals or more minimalist, the effect is the same: the outfit looks good without announcing that it tried. This pairing doesn’t ask too much of the wearer, which is a plus. The formula is genuinely one of the few combinations where you can get dressed running as late as can be, grab whatever is close by, and still leave the house looking like you spent time and effort putting it together. That’s not a coincidence. It’s a well-engineered pairing.

Mid-Rise Jeans + Toe Loop Sandals

This combination has been living in my head rent-free lately, mostly because it has this slightly retro but Mediterranean-on-a-budget feeling that I find very appealing. The toe loop sandal does something interesting to the proportions. It’s a flat shoe, so everything stays grounded, but the toe loop itself has a cool structure that prevents it from becoming another boring sandal. Mid-rise jeans are the key here rather than high-rise. It avoids the matronly look that high-rise jeans and a flat sandal can have, depending on the cut. Mid-rise lets the waistline sit naturally, and the overall silhouette is much more relaxed. I’ve seen it paired with a slightly flared leg a lot, which essentially recreates a look that should have stayed in the early aughts, but somehow gets better with time.

Birkenstocks + Baggy Jeans

This one is everywhere right now and almost risks tipping into cliché territory, but somehow it hasn’t. I think it’s because Birkenstocks, unlike most “it” shoes, actually have a strong enough identity that they aren’t really absorbed into any trend cycle. They have been around forever, and baggy denim has been there right alongside them. The combination works because both pieces have the same energy: unfussy, slightly counterculture, and not really all that concerned with being conventionally pretty. Together, they feel deliberate and interesting, unlike when they are alone. The key is the fit. The jeans need to be genuinely baggy, not just “relaxed.” When the proportions are right, this is the closest thing to a zero-effort outfit that still has a point of view.

Flip Flops + Distressed Denim

I know, I can feel the hesitation here, but hear me out. The flip-flop is having a real resurgence lately, but not the foam kind that you grab at Old Navy before a beach trip. The thoughtful, material-forward versions from brands that have been thinking and reconsidering what a flip-flop can be. Paired with slightly distressed and worn-in denim, it reads casual in a current way without leaning too close to teenager territory. Worn-in denim is important here rather than a straight clean wash because the whole point of this combination is leaning into undoneness. A pristine pair of jeans with flip-flops is just an unfortunate-looking accident. A well-worn pair with some texture reads as a full look. Flip-flop choice matters too. Stick with suede, leather, or something with enough substance that it doesn’t look like you just grabbed it on the way out the door.

Straight Leg Jeans + Strappy Sandals

This is the combination I reach for when I’m trying to make an effort, even if the effort is minimal. The straight-leg jean is arguably the most versatile cut in this post because it works regardless of where you land on the shoe spectrum. A strappy sandal, in particular, brings out something in straight-leg jeans that other shoes just don’t. There’s a clean, architectural quality to it, especially when both are in neutrals. The strappy sandal also introduces the option of height. You really don’t need a heel to make this pairing work. Flat strappy sandals absolutely hold their own here and make a complete outfit, full stop. If you want to add a heel, it takes the outfit in a more evening-ready direction in an instant.

The Bottom Line

Four combinations, one very reliable thesis: sandals and jeans will not let you down. The only real variable is which version of that combination fits the vibe you’re going for, whether it’s a composed, put-together read of strappy sandals with a straight leg, or the perfect, unserious energy of a flip-flop tucked under worn-in denim. Either way, you’re working with a formula that has been stress-tested by decades of women who knew exactly what they were doing. Trust it.
