THE SPRING JACKET EDIT

IMAGE

Living in Arizona, you never know what you’re going to get when it comes to the weather. In most cases, spring means getting to shed the heavy coats in favor of a light jacket layer. At least 50% of that is true for the desert. It’s not warm enough in the morning to be without a layer, but not ever cold enough to need a thick, heavy coat. It is, in my opinion, a completely underrated window of dressing, and because it actually feels like a season, it is actually one of the most exciting.

Spring jackets do a lot of heavy lifting. They’re the first thing people see, the piece that pulls an entire look together, and honestly, the item that signals to the world you might have your shit together - at least style-wise. A great spring jacket has the power to make a simple outfit feel completely intentional. Heck, they pull my gym outfits together better than any other piece could. A mediocre jacket, on the other hand, can drag down even the best outfit underneath it.

The good news? This season’s options are really, really good. There is something for times that need more polish, like a work week, and something more effortless for weekends. There is truly a spring jacket style right now made for everyone’s wardrobe and style type. Here are the five I’m most obsessed with and why they should be your next investment.

Cropped, Short Trench Coats

The trench coat has been a wardrobe workhorse for decades, and just when you think it couldn’t possibly get more versatile, someone goes and crops it, suddenly changing the game. The short trench is doing something the classic long version could never: work with just about everything in your spring wardrobe without overwhelming it. Cropped at the hip or just above it, this silhouette adds a sharp, polished layer without the dramatic sweep of a full-length coat. It looks incredible over wide trousers (a proportion play is everything), but also holds its own over midi skirts, straight-leg denim, or even a casual set. The structured collar and belted waist details give it the classic trench DNA, while the shorter length keeps it feeling current and not costume-y.

What to look for: funnel necks are in right now, and adjustable waist options give you the flexibility to wear it open and relaxed or cinched and stylish. Khaki and camel are safe, classic bets, but if you’re leaning more towards bold, ivory is perfect for spring, and you can’t ever go wrong with black.

Windbreakers

Here is where I must ask you to suspend any flashbacks to neon zip-up windbreakers of the ‘90s and come with me to where this style of jacket is now. Because the windbreaker has had a full glow-up, and it is genuinely one of the most stylish (and my favorite) spring jacket options out there. The modern windbreaker is sleek, often anorak-inspired, and pulls off the feeling of looking like a real style choice while being functional. It’s the jacket for people who don’t want to think too hard, but still want to look pulled together. Lightweight technical fabrics, clean silhouettes, and a slightly relaxed fit make this one of those pieces that just works for errands, for travel, or for literally any weekend activity where you want to look like you have your life together without having tried very hard.

What elevates a windbreaker from basic to chic is the cut and color. Optic white, clean black, and earth tones read exponentially more sophisticated than anything bright. And a slightly cropped or blouson cut will always outperform a boxy, shapeless one. Pair with straight-leg jeans and loafers and call it a day. Genuinely one of the easiest outfits you’ll put on all season.

Leather

Let me be very clear: the leather jacket does not need a spring memo. It doesn’t care what season it is. It just works. But there is something about a leather jacket in spring layered over a slip dress, thrown over a white tee and tailored trousers, or paired with something very feminine that hits differently than it does in the fall. The keyword this season is fitted. Not boxy, not oversized (that’s a very different vibe), but genuinely structured and cut closer to the body. A fitted leather jacket is the piece that makes everything underneath it look more expensive. It brings edge without effort, and frankly, it’s the fastest way to elevate any outfit you already own.

This season, the silhouette is clean and minimal. No crazy hardware, no unnecessary details. Just a really good leather jacket that knows exactly what it is. Black is the obvious choice and for good reason, but if you’re open to an alternative, the rich brown leather moment happening right now is worth paying attention to.

Bomber Jackets

The bomber is back, and honestly, it never really left. What has changed is the way we’re styling it. The oversized, streetwear-adjacent bomber that dominated for years has made room for something a little more considered: bomber jackets in elevated fabrics, refined colorways, and silhouettes that work just as well dressed up as they do dressed down. Think wool blends in taupe or charcoal, satin with subtle two-tone detailing, or clean technical fabrics in neutral greens. The DNA of the bomber - ribbed cuffs, zip front, and a relaxed drape - translates beautifully when the fabric and color palette are doing the right work. Pair it with tailored trousers and ankle boots for an outfit that reads chic rather than casual. Keep it relaxed with wide-leg jeans and a simple tee if that’s more your vibe.

The bomber is genuinely one of the most versatile spring layers when you pick the right one. For sizing, go true to size or one up, but avoid going oversized unless the jacket is specifically designed for that silhouette. A well-proportioned bomber should still have a shape. Relaxed, but not drowning.

Asymmetrical & Crossover Blazers

And then there’s this one. The category that is really underutilized when it comes to spring jackets, and I think that makes the strongest case for doing something a little different this season. The asymmetrical or crossover blazer is having a moment, and if you’ve been sleeping on it, consider this a wake-up call. Where a traditional blazer can sometimes read a little stiff or overly corporate, the crossover or wrap construction immediately softens the silhouette. The diagonal closure creates a natural visual line that is flattering on basically everyone, and the slight architectural quality of it makes the whole thing feel cool in a way that effortlessly chic outfits always do. It’s structured but relaxed and polished but not precious.

Style it over wide-leg trousers with a simple cami underneath, and you have an outfit that works from a launch meeting to dinner. Try it over a midi slip dress with block heel mules, and you have an easy, sophisticated spring look. This is the jacket for the person who already has the classics and is ready for something with a little more point of view.

The bottom line

Spring dressing gets a lot easier when you have the right jacket and harder when you don’t. The five styles cover a range of vibes, price points, and occasions, but what they have in common is that they’re worth investing in. Not because they’re trendy (though they are), but because they’re genuinely good at what they do. Pick the one that fills the actual gap in your wardrobe. If you’re heavy on basics and looking for polish, the crossover blazer or cropped trench will do the work. If you want effortless, the windbreaker or the bomber is your answer. And if you’re going for timeless with an edge, you know just where to go. The spring jacket situation is officially handled. The rest of the outfit is up to you.
